I find painting the symbols helps alot, i realy indulge myself in the colours. (trick i learnt from
Marabas's elemental gateway symbol cards).
Then I just remeber what i have painted. The same technique can be used to create Angels ect using the book Angelic Images-Construction of Godforms and Astral Imagaes. The book goes with the Complete Golden Dawn but can also be used freestyle to suit.

Yeah thats right. Pictures, etc, serve to imprint on your mind what something should basically look like and then later, when you come to visualise it, the task will be easier. As you point out, the trick then is to use the other senses in conjunction to make the visualisation 'come alive' so to speak. It's not impossible to learn (I assume!) but is tricky and needs practice......unless you're marvelously gifted that is and you can do it from day one!!

Great stuff Windymiller. Visulising isnt alien power, only obtainable by a chosen few, as some seem to make out. Its a natural proccess that we all do all of the time. For example, if i were to ask you to remember what your sofa looks like?...what colour is your sofa?...how does it smell?....how does it feel?.. If i were to ask you to describe your sofa in detail you would have to recall/visualise it. Hold that recall/visualisation in your mind for as long as you can and you are exercising your visual skills. As you nicely pointed out this can be also be done with pictures but make sure to use all 5 senses. Feel, smell, hear and even taste that flaming pentergram.

Nice one

Hey there. I asked exactly the same question of the SA a few days back and Denise replied with a bit of advice...I won't copy the e-mail out cos' it'll take too long but will just give the essentials: get yourself OEXP037 on visualisation -it outlines steps to help yourself. Also when visualising then try to obtain pictures of what is going to be visualised and study them closely to become totally familiar with them. So if you're after visualising 'flaming' Pentegrams then try and get a hold of some pictures of them, if it's the Archangels of the four quarters then try and get pictures of them too so as it is totally clear in your own mind what they should look like. Hope this of some help.
Regards

I will be into my 5th month now and I feel things are starting to improve. My visualised pentagrams are getting pretty solid though they still break up, bits dissapear and they change colour alot. My mind still wanders especialy during my morning exercises but i just bring my mind back to the pentagram (I choose a pentagram as my concentration object). Trying to hard can be a hinderance. Try shortening the lenghth of time you spend visualising but do it more often. Any spare moment can be used for visualisation practice.
Learning to focus improves your willpower, intelect and the ability to perform Magick, as well as much free entertainment. Even though it wont feel like it sometimes every time you do it you will get better at it.

Best of Luck

Exactly the same as me when I started. Keep it up, it takes time but the results will come.

Hi Ricenpeas. Thanks for the friendly advice you gave me! I thought it would be easy as I daydream with no problem but I tried with a candle flame but my mind wanders away from what I want to visualize. As I said closing my eyes helps but its not ideal even then.

Hi Chris.
Visualisation is my weak point too. Yes, closing the eyes is a great way to learn. Some recomend turning your eyes upwards but i would recomend going with what is comfortable to begin with. Once you get the hang of it try it with your eyes open. Pick a spot in the air about 3/4 feet away and visualise an object. Remember we use all 5 senses when visualising so you will probably find you are better with some senses than with others. Just keep chipping away at it. It takes time and practice but its seriously worth it.
Visual Magick by Jan Fries, available from Mandrake of Oxford, and Fr. Sisto
Opening Gateways from the S.A. audio collection really helped me as did reading a bit of fiction and listening to Beethoven.

Hope That Helped
