Thanks you Denise and all all who contributed to this thread. I am enrolled for a local Tarot class on Wed. nights and they require this deck. I was looking for a Rider made version. I just ordered one from here.

Three part explanation of the Rider-Waite Tarot 'editions' confusion:
1)The SA's Rider-Waite Tarot are made by Rider of London. I have no idea of
how much stock SA have but what I can tell you is that these are the last
ones made by Rider and the best available. They are excellent quality. Once
the are gone you'll be stuck with the 'Original Rider waite deck' below:
2) Rider is now owned by Random House and they subcontract manufacturing of
the 'Original Rider Waite Tarot Deck' to a company in Italy where they make
a facsimile of an old 1910 deck, slightly different from the ones Rider made
(different because the colours are faded, etc, antique looking). These card
are marked (c) US Games 1971 because US Games (Stuart kaplan) have bought all
rights to the names Rider tarot/Waite Tarot, etc from Waite's daughter, and
Rider/Random can only now print new decks under licence from USG (losing
anyone ?) You can compare RW/ORW at http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/original-rider-waite/
3) America: The authorised American Waite Tarot is the US Games version of
1971 available in several sizes, so ignoring the sizes there are THREE
versions of the Rider/Waite Tarot.

Hi AJ, mine are the same size as the stanard playing cards but if the minituare ones was what Denise was referring to then I can see why she said they were not much use but I get on fine with mine.

Re Pocket edition of the RW there were 2 of these, one interchangea
-bly called pocket and 'miniature edition'. The miniature really
was a novelty, a good bit smaller than playing cards, smaller than
a credit card. (AJ)

Why do you feel that the pocket edition were not much use? I did and still do still have the full size deck but was forever dropping them when I tried to shuffle due to the size of them so I purchased the smaller size which has identical symbollogy so therefore are as good for divination as the larger deck in my opinion....correct me if I have missed your point.

I didn't say they weren't any good for divination I said they weren't any good for magical purposes (i.e. too small/impractical to be used as symbol/meditation cards). We cannot tell from here how a client is going to use their cards -for divination or for meditation. Because the Rider was the first deck with the possibility of using the cards as meditational gateways to the pathways to the tree of life they need to be of a size which you can see without strain from a cross-legged position or seated in front of an altar and the smaller cards aren't large enough for that. Have you tried shuffling the regular sized pack end on? That works for me, even with Crowley's thoth deck. ;-) BB Denise W.

I have the Rider-Waite. I no longer have the box and can't remember now
what was on it, whether serpent or wheel of fortune ? I have an instruction
book that says Rider & Co, vauxhall, London, yet the cards are printed
US Games on the border. Again same background of lilies/roses and yes the
blue is turquoise blue, but not really green. They have good colours and
very plasticised. Does SA maybe have stock with an earlier box as official
site for Rider/Random house has the box John describes. Likewise, if SA
have a better deck, a picture might help if there is a link ?
I also have several editions of the Crowley-Thoth which vary from each other.
Old 2-piece white box OTO design is very smart but the cards aren't so good compared to modern editions: no 'spider-web' on the borders and a greenishness
to all the cards. Keep well, Alan.

Firstly can I ask anyone contributing to this thread to say in which country they purchased their cards as obviously we only have partial knowledge of U.S editions? Rights issues were different in the U.S. to the U.K. and different boxes and back designs were used from edition to edition. The oldest Rider-Waite pack I and Marabas remember had the Fortuna card printed on the front of the box but on checking our little 'museum' here I found a 1993 edition pack with Temperance on the front! The oldest Rider-Waite pack we have (from the late 1970s has blue cross-hatching on the back of the cards (v.traditional). The current printing on our shelves has Fleur de Lys on the backs instead and so does the 1993 edition I mentioned. The later editions too all seem to have an Orouborous snake on the 'fly' card but the oldest pack doesn't! I reckon we need some Tarot historian who has kept track of the various editions to enlighten us, though it makes no difference magically, it is still a most necessary pack. BB Denise W. </I></P>

Thanks for the info on Rider-Waite Blue pack. I am wondering if
they are the same as the ones I have (one of few items I did not
obtain from SA as they were a Xmas gift). The box mine came in
identified Rider of London, but had a serpent biting it's tail
in a circle; blue card backs with white rose/lilies ? The box
title was 'Original Rider Waite Tarot Deck'. If yours are
different cards rather than just the box edition I'd be interested
in buying a deck.

Hi James,
As far as I have read,
The Rider-Waite deck was reissued in America in the early 1970's and coloured
in solid colours as all the publisher had was black and white plates. The Original Rider Waite deck is a facsimile of a 1910 edition and the colours are more subtle and have more shading and a water-colour look, I prefer the Original version myself. The Thoth deck used to be available in a smaller edition but may now be out of print ???

Hi John, Marabas says that the Rider Deck is so important that it has been in pretty well continuous imprint since the early 1970s when the current revival of interest in magical things spawned a market large enough to support it. There were some poorly printed early American packs produced by novelty companies on shoddy unplasticised stock which used to fall apart after a few dozen uses and these tended to be the pale coloured ones. (N.B. This is not a crack at American production methods - these cards were purposefully made down to a price). In the U.K. the cards were produced by the Rider publishing Company throughout (hence the name Rider-Waite Blue Pack which is the term sometimes used by occultists over here to distinguish the Rider Waite deck - it has always been provided in a cosmic blue box with the Fortune Card on the front as per tradition) and the quality of their stock and printing has been proved excellent. Hi, you used to be able to get the smaller version of the Rider Waite which I think were called the pocket edition which I have as the standard size are too big for me to shuffle. The deck I have are more colourful than a similar deck which I believe are called the Original Waite? I don't know if the SA stock these but I'm sure you can still get them.

Hi, We used to stock the pocket Rider but they were really a novelty -far too small to be of any use magically - and they weren't that much cheaper than a full size pack so to me there seemed little point.
