Risky indeed, and strangely anally retentive! Marabas says that before you read any book you should look on the imprint page to see when it was first published because they are all a product of their period. As the occult renaissance gathered place in the late 1800s you could still be prosecuted for witchcraft and the church had a strangelhold over the Establishment. Occult authors of the time trod a very fine line and had to throw in the obligatory deference to the Establishment in order to remain free to express themselves in other ways. Additionally, many of those authors were themselves products of their period and homophobia was de-rigeur for any 'decent' person in those days. It is up to the reader to intelligently unpick the gems of knowledge in these books from the pretences and smokescreens put there to disinterest the profane. Fortune's other work The Esoteric Philosophy of Love and Marriage sounds today like a promol leaflet from a chastity belt manufacturer - yet her grasp of qabbalah and her understanding of initiated perspectives is easily seen in The Mystical Qabbalah and any of her occult novels. In short an occult authors moral opinions are different to statements of fact about magical technique. Marabas says a lot depends how you define 'souls'. As that vital spark of divine life within us EVERYTHING has soul to a genuine esotericist and all are part of the same unified cosmic dance. Everyone's energy field is different and is never constant so change has to be accounted for. A person's energy seeks to complete itself in a way suitable to its own nature to allow that nature to further evolve. This must be taken into account during ceremonies - but only in the same way that you would take into account a different phase of the moon, or a different season. M says it is all a matter of balancing energies. BB Denise W.

Dion Fortunes book on Qaballah was the best I've read, out of print
I believe. I didn't read 'Psychic self defense'. Her legacy, The society of The Inner Light, insists that applicants be exclusively British, with good knowledge of fairy tales,(which do contain much
British occult meaning) that because of the sexual polarity in
their workings, do not accept Homosexuals. Anyone who has ever taken a drug not prescribed, e.g. cannabis, are permanently 'changed' and unsuitable. I guess these requirements were formulated by Ms. Fortune. That's their prospectus for candidates, what do you make of it? I find the drug statement daft, personally. I had many Magickal experiences before taking any drugs, then I was prescribed ergotamine based migraine treatment,
ergot is the basis of L.S.D. and I found a legal, very potent hallucinogen. That would be acceptable, taking L.S.D. wouldn't.
It takes all sorts to make a world, in this case, a very specific sort. I read this directly from the application booklet, I wonder what others think of this?
