I think the LHP is a method that takes you beyond duality, just as the right hand path is. The Adepts from the Society of Dark Lily and the Order of Nine Angles (the two groups I was most involved with) all said that the goal is to go beyond opposites/duality. In fact the Adept of DL said that there was no difference between the RHP and LHP (except in ways that do not matter).
The LHP is NOT about being evil and stuck in duality, maybe I did not word it to sound thus :) but, in my experience of the LHP, the purpose is, exactly as you say to go beyond opposites. :)

To expand upon Marabus and Paul's comments; The Bhuddist Mahayana,
or 'Great school' of thought, is the path of the celibate ascetic monk, The Yellow hats, contrasting with the Nihayana, or 'little school' of thought, The red hats. The red hats are Tantric Magicians, the yellow, classic mystics. Illustration: When communist Russia fell, Eastern Russia, traditionally Bhuddist, saw the return of wandering Bhuddist Monks. However, their behaviour as red hats shocked them; for, not only do they practise sex magick, but indulge in drunken-ness etc. exploring all avenues of human nature, as: To overcome the enemy,(attraction and repulsion) one must first know the enemy.
As a Tantric in the late 70's, one was dismayed to find that contact pages, occult girl/boy, invariably stated 'no lhp.'
It seemed that people believed that sex magic alone, (probably not aware of other lhp practices) made one an 'evil' person. This made
things awkward, until around the time 'Sting', the singer, proudly announced He could do Tantric sex for hours, and the mass seemed to think, ' oh, it's all right, Sting does it.' That seems absurd;
perhaps there were far deeper reasons as to the change in attitude, but chronologically, thats what happened.
Does any one know of other reasons why lhp sex magick became 'o.k.' seemingly overnight?
Do you know Nephtys, Paul? I relate to a song: 'Star gaze with me, in the dark side they'll see, up in the galaxy, staring down, on Me.' Night-night All.

I think LHP Practitioners will answer your question in a number of ways.
Some of the LHP principles that I follow:
Think for yourself. DO NOT believe, but seek TO KNOW. Do not worship anything or anyone, seek to become a God (Adept), become one with Nature and the Cosmos, Know Yourself, Do Not React, be true to Yourself, indulge in your desires but with RESPONSIBILITY.
Also, we examine 'evil' and 'darkness', not as an ego indulgence, but as an attempt to go beyond socialisation and the unconscious programming of society. Thus, the infamous Black Mass (which has a number of forms) may serve as a de-conditioning ritual, likely to work better for those that have been raised in a Christian worldview than pagans or Hindus etc though it can be adapted for other religious systems (there was a Turkish Satanic group in the 1980's that performed an Islamic Black Mass).
When I was heavily involved in the Sinister Path, much of my spare time was outside alone in the woods, being there, connecting with nature, sometimes performing rites, sometimes just walking, be it at night or during the day. This served as a prelude to a 40 day retreat into nature.
I think the LHP is one of exploration beyond limitations, it has multiple forms and is definately worth exploring if the individual can go beyond the first trial, which is seeing beyond its dark persona...
Hope this helps, it's all my opinion. S.A. and other Occultists/Wyrdos etc may disagree... :)

Superstitions and prejudice against left-handed people continued well into the 20th century, at least in some places. My Norwegian grandfather (1902-1988) was lefthanded, and was beaten at school in Norway for writing with his left hand. He was forced to learn to write with his non-dominant right hand, for whatever reason. Apparently, his was not an isolated example either. I've heard that lefthanded people were killed a few centuries back, especially for making the sign of the cross with the left hand while praying or in church--they were just doing the gestures in the natural way for them, but some church leader came up with the notion that crossing oneself with the left hand was a form of "devil worship." Sigh...I've always figured left and right were just two sides of a symmetrical whole...

I READ ABOUT THIS EVERYWHERE AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT ACTUALLY MEANS??!
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE FROM A RIGHT HAND PATH?

[infoburst: There´s a lot of self-righteous emotional moralising attached to this term stemming from superstitions concerning left-handed people (i.e. crooked things) and because of this the term has gained popularity to define someone who is on a Satanic or Dark path, however technically Marabas teaches that it is originally drawn from Tantric Yoga practices where the Yogini always sat at the Left Hand of the Yogi. In European magic it comes from the ancient Greek world where diviners would look into the sky for omens and anything approaching from the right was considered fortuitous and anything from the left would be seen as ominous. The Romans continued this tradition and their word for 'left' (Sinisto) produced our modern word Sinister.
