Why, indeed, were the cards discarded? This triplicity of unity seems innapropriate. Sounds like a potentialy confusing gimmick, impure, the 'true' pack, created in Crowleys later years, combined with the book, explains Thelema succintly, without alteration.
For those who say the pack is too big to shuffle easily; instead of shuffling sideways, try it length ways, problem sorted.

>>>The Thelemic New Year: March 20th, is celebated by daily meditation on each of the 22 paths/trump-cards. To be a Purist, One should have a copy of 'The Holy Books of Thelema', to quote daily excerpts , as given, appropriate to the days path/card. 3 magii? The three wise men, in the New Aeon? Fishy.

Good stuff John, see here also an explanation from Lon Milo Duquette of the
OTO:

"The mystery of the three magi of the Thoth Tarot, is no mystery at all. The seventy-eight cards of a standard tarot deck are printed on four sheets of twenty cards per sheet. This provides room for eighty card-size images per print run. Most publishers fill the extra spaces by printing two instructional or promotional cards. Rather than doing that, the Swiss publishers, A.G. Mueller, decided to treat Crowley/Harris aficionados to a little bonus by filling the extra spaces with two earlier versions of the Magus that Harris completed but Crowley rejected. They were never intended to replace or supplement the final version of the card Crowley approved".

ps. Beware the '3 Magus editions' sold in many New Age shops are smaller than
they should be and I don't mean the 'Pocket Thoth'.

Best get your Thoth deck
from the SA who always sell the best and correct sized version.</a>

YITGW, Chris.

Hello D.Anderson, Crowley's 'Book of Thoth' will show you which is the 'right' one of the 3 Magus/Magicians to use which is the one AC authorised. Lady Frieda Harris who painted the Thoth tarot often had to paint several editions until AC was satisfied. I don't know how many of the 'unauthorised/rejected'paintings ever survived but I believe these 2 extra Magicians are among the original set of paintings(at the Warburg institute, London ?). They may also have been kept because Lady Harris once put several of the original paintings on display without AC's consent (there is a pamphlet in existence of correspondence between AC/Harris and others during the Thoth project in which AC mentions Harris mischievously doing this display and using versions of Trump no.1 he had rejected).
Tarot cards usually come in packs of 80 (why? ...dunno!) with 78 actual cards and 2 used as adverts or info of sorts. Some Thoth editions will have the 78 plus two 'advert' cards, usually one with Crowley's Unicursal hexagram and one with the OTO seal and address. In other prints they have these two extra magician cards (for show only, not to be used in the deck, though I suppose
if you're not a purist you could leave out the official Magus and use one
of the alternatives)
Hope this helps a bit. - John.

[Infoburst: Well posted and admirably succinct John. As you rightly point out the Key to the Thoth Deck is Crowley's Book of Thoth. The qabbalistic, mystic, numerical, symbolic and allegorical meanings of each card are outlined in The Book of Thoth in exhaustive detail. Presumably then the 'discarded' duplicate cards were imperfect in his schema and so should not be used for magical purposes. Tarot decks normally have 78 cards but often carry two extra 'fly' cards to protect the pack serving the purpose of 'fly leafs' in books.

To SA and forum readers, Hi,

I am thinking of getting a set of Crowley Thoth Tarot cards and have heard
that there is a 78 card edition and an 80 card edition with 2 additional
magician cards. Can SA tell me if they supply which edition ? Also, are these
additional 2 magicians just for comparison or to use and does it matter
which is used ? (A bit confused !)

Thank you in advance for any replies,

D.Anderson
