Please excuse my ignorance, I am wondering if anyone
can tell me what sorcery is and if it is a proper 'path'
and if Chaos magic is the closest approximation to
what might be called 'sorcery'. I know some traditional
magicians may dislike the word as it seems to infer
black magic or a foremost interest in getting results
such as where Crowley speaks of sorcerers and black
brothers? is this all just a remnant of old aeon stuffiness?
Is a sorcerer one who can get the results where maybe some
ceremonial/traditionalists are just mystics ?
..Trying to cut my way to a path that is real and works,
Rob.K

[Infoburst: Marbas teaches that it's all about definitions. The word Sorcery originally comes from the French Sortilege (to cast fortunes using lots or runes) but has been used as a synonym for Magic for hundreds of years. There is no 'path' of
sorcery as such, though many magical techniques are seen as 'sorcery' based on the idea of a 'sorcerer' Manipulating the world using natural magic. Although it is often considered by the layman to refer to the 'darker' side of magic, sorcery is all about using natural magic to change the status quo and and the methods are not inherently evil in themselves, hence sorcery is the manipulation of nature for good or bad magic at the choice of the sorcerer. This is often compared with Qabbalistic Magic or Theurgy which, because its tradition is based on a monotheistic religion, incorporates high moral principles related to the demands of a god. Theurgists may therefore look down upon sorcery as immoral but this is a limited value judgement based on sectarian prejudice and sorcerers may consider themselves ammoral. Chaos magic is therefore a form of sorcery but not a path of sorcery. BB Denise W. ]
