Hi Tony, Received a letter from Doug Smith the other day. He spent 22 yrs in the Navy. Retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1990. Thought you would like the info... I am very impressed with the number of our guys who opted for military service when the times were pushing you to do just the opposite... Proud to know you who have protected our shores in peace and in wartime.. Thankyou for your service to our beloved country. Alice.

Hi Tony, Glad to see you on the site. I never got the op to get into the nurse corp. But my brother Ed, he was in the Class of 69 had joined the Navy before he graduated they had "promised" to teach him to fly and when he got in the said go suck raw eggs lol.... He got NJ state Senator to bail him out and put him in the Army where he became a WO. Flew helicopters. Got orders to Nam but the orders were REDLINED due to the signing of the peace treaty. We were happy because we knew the most Heli pilots never came home... He ended up in Korea when the shooting started back up there due to an incident at the DMZ.... In later yrs became a civilian consultant first to the marines & navy for helicopter plans and later in the area of personnel field. Retired a yr ago. Now living in AZ.

Tony,
Thank you for the compliments on my website. I've been working on it for a long time.
It's interesting that you were in the medical corps, because that's how I got into the Navy so quickly: I volunteered for the medical corps. While everyone else was waiting months and months to get in, the recruiter asked me if I would volunteer to serve as a hospital corpsman, which quite often meant being stationed as a field medic with the Marines, and I said "sure! Anything. Just get me the hell outta here." So he put that on my enlistment papers and that was how I was able to jump to the front of the line and get into boot camp the same week I turned 18.
When I got there and took the aptitude tests and the personnel officer started talking about electronics and radar and radio, I said "but I volunteered to be a hospital corpsman" and he said "we can change that and you can go into electronics instead, if you want." I'll never know for sure, but I think it's a pretty safe bet that my life could have been verrrry different had I not been offered that choice at that moment.

David very good to get a reply. I was taken to the medical and put into the ARMY 12/69. Tested very good and opted for the roll of combat medic / psychiatric sp. I confirmed that this ¿mos¿ has never gone into to combat in the history of the US at the time. 50 weeks of school and ¿OJT¿ (including boot and ait) left the program as Sp5. Four weeks into first duty, station came down on orders for NAM - letter from Nixon - first time ever to happen in the history of the US. My lick. Did the time stationed out of Cameron Bay in both aspects of my MOS.
Your site and pics are VERY COOL.

Tony,
I live in western NY, and have since I was discharged from the Navy in 1972 except for the one year I lived in New Hampshire, where I did my freshman year of college.
I enlisted in the Navy while still in high school but had to wait until I turned 18 to report for duty. I turned 18 on July 11th and was in boot camp on the 16th. Tested high in math so I was sent to seven months of electronics, radar and radio operation training and eventually ended up on a destroyer that was home-ported out of Long Beach, CA. We were deployed with the 7th Fleet in Southeast Asia from Nov through May, 69-70, 70-71 and 71-72. We spent a lot of that time acting as a floating artillery unit for the Marines in Viet-nam near the DMZ, firing our 5" guns 24/7 from a half mile off the coast until we ran out of ammo, at which p[oint we would hook up with an ammo ship out in the Gulf and take on more. Also spent time further out into the escorting the aircraft carriers. Probably spent about 12 months in the combat zone altogether, but was never in it for more than a five week stretch at any one time. Much safer duty than most soldiers had it, but we were within VC mortar range and had some casualties just before I came on board.
Got some nice pictures here:

I would like to get to find out how everyone else is doing and if any one else lives in South Jersey by Philly.
Also did anyone else get involved in the military in the old days ?

Good luck to ALL and look forward to the reunion.
