It *is* a small world! We stayed with friends who were born and raised in Hershey...they live only a few miles from the Hotel, and walk the trail all the time.
We'll be at the "Hershey Hillclimb-2004" . It's a nice vintage race event...I wouldn't miss it.
Can't tell it's me in that picture? Gosh, I wonder why? (OK, that *was* sort of mean). I know there's some old /new shots of me on this page:

Alice,
Not to worry . . . I never took it that way in the first place. I was simply reflecting IN GENERAL on how it is not difficult these days to spot real slobs in nice restaurants and other places where some amount of decorum would be expected. I mean, just imagine if, say, your college professor were to show up for class in a Hawaiian shirt!? Where does it end?

Dave I know you could never be labeled a slob. I we were really kidding you about the biker duds. Knew you know how to dress for the occasion. Always trying to have a good time. Alice

Hey Nial,
Thought I would check out the picture to see if I could place your face. Hmmmm....don't recognize you. However, I did recognize the Hotel Hershey Hill Climb. I live a couple of miles from the hotel and regularly walk/jog those hill climb trails. Small world.

Helen:

Just got a chance to scan through your "saga"....I recall that we talked about it a bit on "classmates" quite some time ago. All I can say is, "You *go*, girl!".......not sure what else can be said. Hat's off to you and your husband for showing "true grit" and determination in your battle with cancer.
Probably all of us have indirectly known someone afflicted by this disease, but it's got to be extra tough when it's "personal". My daughter did "The Avon Breast Cancer Walk" (to NYC) in honor of some of our relatives....I met her at every checkpoint and we found that many of the walkers were "surviviors"....very emotional! (she raised $3000).
We have a very good friend that has just been moved to "hospice-level care"....she is a wonderful, cheerful and stoic lady....all her friends and family feel so helpless.
Your "Ten Least Likely Activities..." was funny!....you have a good attitude!

Like your hubby, I think I manage to avoid phtographs by always carrying a camera...this is the only picture you're likely to see of me:

Dave:

When I got hired for my present job, the "unspoken rule" was "wear a tie"......this was in an engineering lab with all sorts of machine tools, robotic arms and various greasy mechanical contraptions. The funny thing was, everyone tucked their tie inside their shirt to avoid getting it caught in various machines. After I was there a while, I convinced my boss that the whole "tie-thing" was a safety hazard, and we all went "casual". That was 20 years ago.......I'm on vacation right now, but the last time I was at work, I wore a Hawaiian shirt.....we're *real* casual now!

Alice,
Thank you for your understanding. Actually, I had two jobs for about four years where I was required to wear a tie and I hated it to the max. So I refused to button the top button of my shirt, and always made sure that the knot of the tie was loose enough that I could slip two or three fingers under it. I never understood the tie thing. (Thai-sticks, now that's another story.) Women in business, while expected to dress appropriately, have no equivalent specific requirement. The funny thing about the two jobs where I was forced to wear a tie was that in both cases I was employed as a computer network support technician, which meant that on any given day I could be found literally crawling under desks or into closets with a flashlight on my hands and knees to inspect wiring, or any number of other dusty, dirty tasks, with my tie dragging through mouse (the rodent kind) droppings on the floor. By contrast, I also worked as a professional librarian for fifteen years and did not HAVE to wear a tie during that time, even though many of my peers did so by choice. Except for my wife's retirement party and those two jobs I mentioned above, I have worn a tie only to weddings and funerals, out of respect to the principal individuals involved.
But I wouldn't dress like a slob or a biker in public anyway. For me, retirement parties and semi-elegant dinners and such are treated as dressy-casual affairs, which means that I'm quite accustomed to being the only guy at them to NOT be wearing a tie, although in other respects I would never be labeled a slob!

You wondered where I am in any of the pictures?

Well, "House Rules" have deemed pictures of me a Necessary Evil ever since my right ear was cut off in 1981 and my mouth became something of a 45-degree line across my face. (It's less pronounced these days, but...) If you have the time/interest, you can read about it on www.helenas-update.com (Beware, it's NOT a short story!)

Having said that... You can find me in the group picture. It's labeled 20030719-2202-44. I'm standing in the front row, the second female to the right of the group that's seated. I'm wearing a red and white dress.

And, since Ken took all the pictures that are posted, there are none of him. :)

Why so many jackets and ties??? Could it be - oy vey - maturity or something??? :)

Actually, there was a variety of fashions at the reunion. Although many of the men wore jackets and ties, a few wore t-shirts. My husband (who's not in any of the pictures, as he took them) wore a sports coat but a Garfield computer tie.

He actually likes to wear ties; epecially "strange" ones, many of them computer or cooking related. :) In one of his former jobs, the employees were dressed in business casual but the consultants (like him) wore ties. So, he said, "If I have to wear a tie, it might as well be a funny one."

Dave....I *know* you want to do this, but you're not supposed to wear a motorcycle helmet and black leather jacket to a high school reunion.
In fact, be brave!......wear a bow tie! (I'll bring bring my camera) lol

Hi Helen, The pictures are great. Looks as though every one had a great time. Mr Morra looks wonderful. How can I get in touch with him? Do you know? Alice

Helen:

Thanks! I honestly only recognize Mr. Morra and Bernie Reider (I see Bernie once-in-a-while....haven't seen Mr. Morra in years). My sister graduated around '75, so she might recognize some of those folks.

I like the idea of a mixed "Thiry Something" reunion...as time goes on, it may be the best way to get a good number of folks to attend. A friend of mine just went to a similar mixed-year event...it was his 55-th year from Madison High (NJ), but since it covered about 10 years, there was a big crowd.
The obvious question: are you and hubby in any of the pictures?
Again...thanks. The pictures are great....we'll have to do the same thing at ours.

Well, it was a great party last night. :)

About 200 people showed up; including Frank Morra, Bernie Reider, Bob Darton, and Walter Reed. (The last two didn't arrive in Jackson until the 70s.)

I spoke with Mr. Reider about the Class of '68 Reunion, and he said two people have already spoken to him about it. Both Reider and Morra gave speeches at the event.

As promised (threatened?), Ken has posted the many pictures he took with the digital camera. You can find them on the following web site:

http://www.smilesontheweb.com/reunions/

If you click the "Comments" box below each picture, you can enter a comment and it goes straight to Ken - it's not posted. Once upon a time, it was designed for folks to add captions, but it never worked correctly.

This site also has 30-second videos of various activities; including one of (part of) Mr. Morra's speech.

Enjoy!

Hi Helen, How was the reunion last night? Hope you had a great time. Were there any teachers there?

Just thought I'd mention this for the benefit of those who may not be aware.

The Classes of '71, '72, and '73 are holding a joint reunion this evening at the Sheraton of Eatontown.

Yes, I'm attending. As a matter of fact, we've just unearthed the appropriate yearbooks. (Hee, hee, hee...) And my husband has his camera all ready to go - he'll probably post digital pictures on the web sometime tomorrow.

It'll be interesting to see who attends from each class, not to mention any faculty. :) (I know there were fewer attendees - and no teachers - at the '73 25th reunion than at the 20th. Then again, I showed up one day after being discharged following lung surgery.) I'll post a report tomorrow or shortly thereafter, depending on how things go.
