Hey,
Me love you long time. Ok, things to remember, does any one remember house parties, where you would play pin the tail on the silly donkey, and red light, green light 1.2.3, Simon Sex, also, hop scotch, that was more for the girls, and Jacks, remember Jacks, with that bright red rubber ball. Does anyone remember the Harlem Globe Trotter's with Meadow Lark Lemmon when they came to Jackson, how so not in the budget was that?
How about sit-coms, remember the shows, Laughin, lots of actors careers began there, and Sonny Fox and the Sandy Becker hour, on Saturday mornings.
How about sitting in the rear wheels of the bus, on the hump, didn't it cramp your legs up if you were tall. Did any one ever wonder who shuts the door when the bus driver gets out? How about the Brady Bunch, Mr. Brady was an architect and there were 9 people who lived in the house and 4 bedrooms. Does any one remember Patty Dukes brother's name, or Samantha and Darins nosey neighbor's name? Did any one go to Collier's Mills lake on Sunday for family swimming or Browns Mills, by the Debourha Hosp. The spelling i'm not sure off.
Have a great day,
Oscar.

hey nial: been in wantage since 91. beautiful place but you have to like spending a lot of time in your car..kinda like jackson 35-40 yrs ago ecept with hills and cows instead of chickens. standard joke is human population just exceeded the bovine but cows are still working off a larger gene pool. if you ever catch sussex boro on a saturday night you'll really appreciate that. remember the fire well. we hosed down our roof and shrubs to douse the air born sparks, mid day seemed like 9:00 at night, real scary stuff. been a while since i even thought about that.glad we all survived, i remember a couple of people didn't but i don't remember names.

Nial writes (in part):
>Helena: Howard Johnson? the restaurant guy?
Nope. :) Although I'm pretty sure I must've thought that at the time.

>When we had Driver's Ed., our old driving teacher, Don Connors, would make us stop at Gerfin's so he could go in and "get cigarettes". I always liked Mr. Connors and I'm not bad-mouthing him....but it sure took him a long time to "get cigarettes".

Yes, Connor was "infamous" for his "side trips" of sorts during Behind The Wheel training. One that particularly sticks in my mind, for some strange reason, was having us go to the drive-up window at the bank on 528 to do "his" banking.

>As for "the great fire"....

We lived on a chicken farm on Jackson Mills-Freehold Road, possibly the only one that didn't blow up from the gas tanks in the fire. My mother, brother, sister and I were taken to the daughter of our next-door neighbor, who lived in Lakewood. The roof of our house suffered slight water damage, but the farm buildings stayed intact. I can't recall how many chickens were lost. And, of course, the woods across the street were all burnt.

Just catching up on the reading....I was away in Ontario (yes, we had the power outage).

Walt: You must live in my neck-of-the-woods. We have a place in Whippany and a lake house in Sussex county.

Helena: Howard Johnson? the restaurant guy?

Here's what I recall about Gerfin's: When we had Driver's Ed., our old driving teacher, Don Connors, would make us stop at Gerfin's so he could go in and "get cigarettes". I always liked Mr. Connors and I'm not bad-mouthing him....but it sure took him a long time to "get cigarettes".
My sister and brother-in-law went to Harley event at Gerfin's some years ago....Malcom Forbes and Liz Taylor showed up on Forbe's Harley (but they left by helicopter).

As for "the great fire"....Charley lived near me, so we both probably had similar experiences. The woods within 15 feet of our house was completely gone. We didn't lose anything, but I turned my pigeons loose and they never came back. MaryAlice Gilligan's Dad drove my family, his own and some others to a safe place in his big old Chevy wagon....we were packed in tight, and as we rode along Stump Tavern Road, we saw flames on both sides of the road....pretty scary!

Hi Pam! Yes Gerfen's was a "political party" place. And so was Rova Farms as I remember.
You're so right about Glory's Market. Great subs is an understatement? Somehow they hade the best coldcuts period!
I can remember the Jackson fires very vividly! We had to evacuate our house as the fire approached. but every road we tried to leave by was blocked by more fires. Our house was saved by Lakehurst Naval Air firefighters. The clothes on the clothes line my mom hung out that morning were actually burnt off, our house was full of smoke, the fence posts were even singed. That's something you'll never forget. Many homes were burnt to the ground. I'm sure you all have stories. Very scary time in Jackson.
Anyway, fond memories of jackson regardless if good or not so good!

Alice....I do traffic studies for the trunk forecasters and traffic engineers at Verizon...I spent the first week of August in New York...a little town in upstate New York, it was pretty nice, but I was glad to get home again.

Oscar...I HAD a Ben Casey shirt....I loved that show....I remember Gerfins Tavern too...is that where they held the politcal picnics? The hambergers at Dutch Hut were great..I ate there a lot! And we use to spend a lot of time at Glorys...they use to candle eggs....Mrs. Glory made the best submarine sandwiches....and the greatest meatball sandwiches....and they had pinball machines that were so much fun!!!

Does anyone remember the big Jackson fire?? That was a scarey time for everyone!

>Hi all, Helena you have a wonderful memory for Jackson. But most of you guys spent more than 4 yrs in Jackson and surrounding areas.

Aw gee... :) Actually, some of it was due to a special project in sixth grade (anyone remember Arlene Fritz?) in which we really studied the history of Jackson, and met Howard Johnson.

I also think I was among the few in my graduating class that completed all grades in the Jackson School District, K-12.

Then there are those who believe I was an elephant in a previous life... :) I say it's self-defense against neurosurgeons who keep telling me before each procedure that I'm likely to be "less sharp" afterwards. They usually wind up shaking their heads in disbelief... (Now, after having had stereotactic radiosurgery the other day, we'll see how this works...)

Let's see whether I can edit this one better...

Oscar writes (in part):
>Does any one remember Miss Garvey, very military stands teacher, very nice, very up to standards, to the point teacher, just curious of her where-a-bouts today.

Miss Annie Garvin, later Dr. Garvin, lived with Miss Brochon for awhile. I first met her in my junior year after she had returned from sabbatical, I presume to work on her doctoral thesis. No, I don't recall the topic.

The sad part about her class (U.S. History I) was that it had a huge dichotomy of students: About a third or fouth "top tier" students; the rest from the middle or the bottom of the heap. As a result, Garvin split the class for most of the weak, putting the upper group in some sort of independent study mode.

I have a feeling the biggest problem most students had with her class was simply understanding her thick accent. I also remembered that she was quite a hockey fan. I still felt she was a great teacher - it was just unfortunate that I wasn't able to really get the most out of "experiencing" her.

>Here are some teacher's that are worthy of an honorable mention, Mrs. Mrs. Rumundi, Mr. Bollotti, Mrs. Bell, Mr. Bill Perry, Mr. Mccarthy, we should have a segment on where are they now.

Rose Raimondi retired in 1973 and died a few years later. Our class gave her a rocking chair as a gift at our Senior Farewell.

I had Mrs. Geneva Bell for freshman gym. I liked her, especially since she was tolerant of my lack of ability. But at least I tried, which was probably why I was spared the taunts she could give to those with lesser ability but not much penchant for trying (which befell one of my friends, whose gym grades probably kept her from being valedictorian).

Angelo Bellotti went to teach 8th grade English when the middle school was established.

Joe Perry died from leukemia in the mid 70s. The gym is named for him.

I had Mr. McCarthy for freshman biology. I think he's retired by now.

Hi Oscar, I remember those teachers well. Do you remember the Sorokas, Mr & Mrs Brooks.

I had Mr. Sroka for freshman homeroom, and his wife Jean was also an English teacher. No idea what they're doing now.

I think the Brookes may still be active in the amateur golf community. I don't think either of them are teaching now.

Miss Smith was last seen, by me anyway (on a Jackson High website about a year or so ago as a guidance counselor.

I think George White may still be teaching in Jackson. We saw him about a year or so ago at Jackson Day - the year when Bernie Reider was the Grand Marshal.

Mr DeCondi he will be at the reunion by the way. I spoke with Candy yesterday she is good friends with his wife and already have agreed to be at the reunion. How aboutMiss Smith the German teacher, Mr Mann, the drama teacher, Mr White History teacher. I would love to contact all of them for the reunion. Any one know how to contact them?? How about you Nial?? Is there someway you could get me in touch with them?....

I believe it was Vincent Marrone (taught 4th grade) and Frank Miri (taught 5th grade). I had neither of them, but they were in the same wing I was.

I think after Mrs. Holman, the Switlik principals were Sciarappa (who went on to become Asst. Superintendent), then John Palsha, followed by Miri.

Ruth Ginnane taught sixth grade for many years. When the roof caved in over part of Brookwood School over Thanksgiving Weekend 1963, my 3rd grade afternoon session class (first year of double sessions) was bussed to Switlik to "share" a classroom with an existing class from the morning session. Miss Ginnane was the teacher of the morning session class.

I've since told people this was where I began my "career" as a commuter. :)

I grew up on a poultry farm, wo we knew the Kittays and Korman, among others. I saw Bruce Glincman at the Reunion two weeks ago.

Steve Kittay once had a car accident with my father. He had three sisters, two of which went to Jackson (Anne was class of 69 or 70; Diane was class of '74) and one brother, Peter (I don't know whether he went to school in Jackson, might have gone to the Hebrew Day School.).

I think Steve passed away about two or three years ago. (I believe he had a history of diabetes.) My mother may have attended the funeral, but I'm not sure.

There was a Hyman Korman in the Class of '71, who was in my German I class. (He was a junior at the time.)

I believe this was Ellen Brochon, who taught Physics, aka my worst academic mistake.

>What was P.E teacher's Florian Keller's a.k.a name?
"Lefty"

>And, the first fast food restaurant in Jackson was on the corner of Brewer's Bridge and County Line rd. what was the name
I think it was the Dutch Hut, but I could be wrong. It was next to the Carvel.

Jersey Mikes are every where now, my friend owns a franchise in Beachwood, but yes they started on Arnold Ave. in Point. When I was there a month ago they were getting ready to open up a Krispy Kreme in Brick, the first one in the state, glad I left before the grand opening the last thing I need is to be hitting the little shop of calories, I'm not heavy, but I only need to look at them, and away we go, and those donuts are habit forming.
Richard Diab, I really don't know, I remember John Diab had a couple of Mickey D's franchise and he was following in his foot steps, will have to check that out. No, Paul was not ever on my bus, but he was in many of my classes. You guys lived in the part of town where it was most happening, by Enno's Lake I lived in Cassville, where the mailman was the same guy as the police man. I lived on 528 where it was almost legal to drag race in the street, back then you only seen a cop once on the weekend, most of the time we were patroled by Wrights Town state police barracks.
However, yes I remember Nick-n-Del's, Bob Unsworth who at one time owned half of the business offered me a delivery job in exchange for tips and free food, which wouldn't have been bad, but I would have gotten to the house with half of a pie, by the time I reached the intended party. I remember Kathy, that is strange Caroline ended up being related to her in some way.
Danny C. was on my bus, he lived in Cassville, on Park ave. if my memory is not messing with me, that was a popular block. Remember Kathy and Penny Whalen, they lived by Linda Singer on East George dr. I wonder what ever happened to them.

Hi Oscar, I sort of remember Paul Loesher riding the same bus at one time. Every year we seemed to have a different route. We use to ride past Bal's Deli or grocer. Pick up Tom Sloop and I remember Paul getting on occasionally when he could go to school.Remember him being in a wheel chair. Legs looked like they were all messed up. I remember when he died. Did you ride the same bus with Danny Schastny? Small world, do you remember Kathy DiPaola? Well her daughter Kristina married Carolyns son Jarred. 2 kids. Do you remember Nick and Dells? Great pizza and subs. Can't get good pizza here in NC. Unless you find someone from Jersey. There is a place here called Jersey Mikes, originated in Pt Pleasant. They make good subs. Hey, what ever happened to Richie Diab?

Thank you Ellen,
can't believe you went to the Hailey Building and whats more, you remember, yes that was Mr. Merri's class you rascal you. Now there was two sessions, I went in the afternoons, and guess who sat next to me on the bus, your sister-in-law Linda Singer, ask her about it. I use to get home in the dark. I use to laugh, because my curfew ended before I got home from school, what the heck was my mom thinking. The cars had the lights on by the time I got home. Ellen, by any chance do you remember a young boy his name was Paul Loeser, in fact our year book has his picture in it in memory of. I gave Paul my baseball glove and I knew he had a terminal illness, but the smile that glove bought to his face was priceless, that is one moment in time I will take with me every where, forever.
Wow, I think this is my first post where I didn't use up all my 2000 characters
bet most of you thought I couldn't do it, well if I don't stop writing now, you guys will be right.

To all: Nick Aspress had a brother named Anthony, lets see what else, yes, Marie Santos had a dog the was the size of a bear, my mom would go there to buy eggs, they had an egg farm. They were very aboundant in Jackson in the 50's and 60's.
Friends of mine, like Steve Gatey ( passed away a couple of years ago), and Tony Bassett who dated Lisa Donovan and Morris Korman all owned egg farms.
If you knew how to candle egges back then, you had a job some where in Jackson.
Does anyone remember Colliers Mills lake and Fort Dix speed way at the south east end of Jackson, by Marshall's corner?
A lot of the Hurley and Switlik family owned all that land back there.
Do any of you remember Whities Tavern?
When I went to Cassville a couple of weeks ago, I went by the tavern, and it's still there, it must have been made of steel and concrete to still be there all those years.
I remember the corn beef hash on our lunch menu, I remember drinking my milk, and stuffing the hash in the empty milk container, yuk, not into the hash. The metal lunch boxes with the thermoses, what a sight. My mom use to put this stuff on my hair, it was called '' Posner's hair Shine'' my hair use to shine like the bumper of a 57 chevy.
I know Nial remembers '' The Bargain Center'' in Lakewood where we all use to get our school clothes, in Lakewood, it was the only place that was near. My parents would drive all the way to Plumstead township just to get a hair cut.
TRIVIA: Name three gentleman from Jackson ( two are 68 grads), that went on to be police officer's one of them to Lakewood P.D?
What Jackson teacher was a nun, and then went on to teach in Jackson instead?
What was P.E teacher's Florian Keller's a.k.a name?
What was the name of the little diner on 528 by the school if you ran through the woods you would run into it, at least that is what I was told, lol.

And more stuff:
I remember the big dog (and high fence) at Santo's house...the fence is still there.
I recall Mr. Maroni and Miri (sp?)...not sure if I had them for teachers.
Miss Ginnane was my 6th grade teacher too....I liked her a lot....she taught me geometry! (I love Math).
I started in Jackson in 4th grade (went to school in Canada and Ireland before that)...then we moved away for 5th grade...then came back for 6th grade and stayed. I had to meet Mrs. Holman as a "new student" twice!...scary! (she was probably *really* a nice lady...but I was terrified at the time).
Re: Jack Munley. He had a buddy who taught English (I think) and this guy was my home room teacher....and I think the fellow's first name was "Ed". Anyway, after college, I taught in a high school in north Jersey and "Ed" worked with me...we did lunch-room duty together...nice fellow: wish I could recall his name...anyone remember who I talking about?
Bonnie Van Arsdale rode the bus with us....her family had a little junkyard we would go to for car parts (for our "woods cars").
I know I've been to "Commodore's Garage" with my Dad for stuff...I'll have to ask him if he remembers.
We did a little "retro-cruise" this week. My kids rented a house at Normandy Beach for the Summer (Normandy is between Seaside and Pt. Pleasant). Since we were down anyway, we went cruising; we hit Island Beach State Park (to see the LBI lighthouse), went cruising through Ocean Terrace Blvd (Seaside), past Lucky Leos, up Rt. 35, and thru Pt. Pleasant, past Jenkinson's, etc......mostly top down (Miata) until it started raining. We also walked the entire Seaside Heights boardwalk. It hasn't really changed that much.
On the way back to Jackson, we passed the dreaded Toms River Motor Vehicle Inspection Station....I think I failed inspection at that place dozens of times.

Great fun to read this stuff....Oscar, you're the champ!....I vaugely recall a lot of it, but only after I've read it.
The "sugar-cube" vaccine was for polio...I'd guess we got it from the school nurse (was that Mrs. TenEyke?..not sure of that spelling).
Evelyn Barcello was a Phys.Ed teacher at Jackson....she taught some of my younger siblings (I'm the oldest of 7). She and I went to graduate school (at Trenton State) and got our Masters at the same time....we took several night classes together. Very nice girl. My Mom says that she's married, living in south NJ somewhere. Mr. Barcello passed away not too long ago. Lydia was a good pal...we were on the Safety Patrol together! I recall taking her to one of our last Senior events. My Mom thinks she's married and in one of the Carolinas.
I'm sure my brother Mark worked at that liitle gas station you mentioned (Norton's), but under different owners. Pretty funny....he's a Silicon Valley lawyer now.
I recall Father Lopez at the little Catholic mission church. I remember that one of the kids in our Confirmation class choose the name "Thor" for his Confirmation name. Father Lopez had a fit! I think he made him change it to "Micheal", or something.
I knew Nick Aspras (he had other siblings...can't recall names). He was in the school band (sax?) and eventually went to Montclair State....was good friends with Eddie Peters (another Montclair grad). Nick was also great pals with Bobby Saulich ('68 grad...still missing from Alice's roster). Bobby's older sister, Georgette, would be about a '67 grad, I think.

You know I loved that car...it was a 59 chevy...drove it until the engine died...I wish I still had that, I remember driving to work in Toms River once during an ice storm....everyone was pulled over to the side of the road but my huge, heavy car was going up those hills w/no problem! I can't believe you remember that! I live in Indiana now and very rarely get back to Jackson. I work for Verizon and may have to work strike duty in New York if the union goes on strike when there contract is up. Where are you and what have you been up to? I didn't go to the reunion how was it and who did you see and what are they all doing. Have we lost anyone from our class? It is hard to believe that we are over a half century! yuck!

Oscar, Nope I don't remmeber that place in Lakewood, but I did go to first grade in the Jackson maniciple/police building when Switlik was maxed out. Yes I remember that garage and the store, my dad was friend w/the Landis..remmeber one of the boys got killed by a farm tractor..he was driving his car and part of the farm emplement was over on the wrong side of the road...I forget his name, but my dad was good friends w/him. I moved away when I was 25....married and went to Indiana where my husband is from. Hey...do you remember the bus station in Cassville? We use to go on that bus to Asbury Park and go shopping.

Trivia
Does anyone remember the 'sugar cube' vaccine?? We all had to go get this?? Do you remember where it was given and what it was for??

Pam, you're memory is way too good! we usually get up to jackson every year to see family & friends. Always amazed to see all the changes.

Oscar, you're fast becoming my Cassville trivia hero! Somehow I remember hearing Evelyn Barcelo was teaching Phys Ed after she graduated. I thought she was somewhere local up there. Do you remember the Guy that bought Norton's garage. I can picture him & his wife, (I think her name was Mary) they used to let us fix our cars if they didn't need the bay for another job. You're right! The Motiffs! What a band. Also say hi to Andy Z. for me.

Carol, Glad you joined in. Do you ever hear from Barb or Lois Mina? Joe married a cousin of mine after school. They just moved here in Florida last year. Can't wait to tell him you're on the site. Take Care. Catch Ya All Later, Charley.
