I cannot get past the logic of wanting to fab your own cables. A Spectrum Wall, for instance, with four stations, requires upwards of 400 feet of aircraft grade cable rated at some 6,400 pounds. The crimp tool is expesive, as is the proper cutting tool. That said, you can buy four pre-fabricated cables from the manufacturer, already cut to proper length, factory crimped. These cables are adorned with factory certification tags and come with the corresponding factory certification paperowrk. Once you locate and purchase the proper cable, hardware, and tools, how much money do you really save? Is it worth accepting the responsibility for the crimping job? Up until this year, the factory had to come to your site, and they would fab the cable right there. With the availability of the pre-made cables, you dodge the $500.00 worth of labor and service call fees, and you are still covered by factory certs. My advice is to order the pre-made cables, and avoid the risk. It may cost slightly more, but what is peace of mind worth to you?

That is just the point. No manf. will allow cables other than their own which come at very high prices. If there was a national standard of certification for performing a straightforward task such as this, a properly trained individual could perform such a replacement by himself in a competent fashion. Incidentally, NJ where I am from, requires an annual changeout in addition to their $400.00 annual license fee despite the fact that the manf. acknowledges that cables are good for some 10,000 cycles.

In moat states (if not all) that have a jurisdictional program which regulate climbing walls, replacement components should be acquired through the MFG. or meet MFG. specs. Before anyone "crimps" wire rope they should have written approval to do so from said MFG.

This brings up an interesting question. I am sure different states handle things differently, but in general, if a certified maintenance mechanic installs the new cables, and does the crimping, is the factory's certification of said cables still neccessary? Would the CMMs signature on this cable replacement be enough?

Please, before anyone tries to crimp any wire rope used for Rock Walls contact said MFG. Most if not all MFG. will not certify the rope for use unless the rope with all crimps are from the MFG.

What brand rock wall do you own? If it is a Spectrum Wall, Spectrum Sports is now selling the cables completely made up, and they include the certification tags. You will need to pull apart one side of the pulley assemblies to thread through the loops, but it saves you $500.00 versus having Spectrum replace them on-site. Also, this will save you the expense of buying that big crimper and other tools. I don't know where one would go to be trained on crimping, but I am sure if you buy everything from a reputable hardware supplier, they will be able to help you. I am hoping you have a Spectrum Wall though, as buying the pre-made cables is absolutely the way to go, and your cable certifications can never be questioned, as they were fabbed at the factory. Hope this helps.

Would anyone know where I could be trained and certified to replace & crimp rockwall cables?
