Note about "sharing transponders."
Please DON'T!
Once the info is entered into the data base, the timing program recognizes that transponder number and all the relative information; driver, car # and class.
If you switch the transponder to another car, the system will recognize it and associate it with the original driver/car/class. I could re-enter the individual info for each change, but that would change the overall input.
At the end of the day, when I "sort" the times by class and best times, I have no way of picking out the times of the 2nd (or 3rd) car.
If someone is more familiar with the program and has a way to "fool" the system, I would love to learn it and implement it.
Please contact me directly at emraregistrar@yahoo.com

OK some answers:
#1 we are not changing our timing system. NOr are we going backward to stopwatches.
#2 EMRA now has 20 transponders & will be getting 10 more by
the first event.
#3 other members have between 11 & 20 more transponders
to lend to EMRA to rent.

Total at most events: 50
that should be more than enough for our time trialers to rent.

I advise for anyone that plan on attending more than 10 events
in their LIFETIME to buy one instead of renting.

Even if you decide to sell it they go for close to cost
upon re-sale. (check ebay)

And for those inferring that I am responsible for the high cost of racing - I apologize. And for the high cost of gasoline. And for the high cost of tires, batteries, helmets, the amount of distance you have to travel and anything else you want me to apologize for.
Just come out to EMRA events and have fun.

Dana, please don't muzzle the dog. We can usually tell when it's time to go out on track when you start up.

F.E., you have to deal with these things in a systemic fashion, evaluating the entire process, identifying deficencies and working to root cause analysis and resolution.

Sticking a muffler on the car will eliminate just one source of the obnoxious noise.

"going bald, gaining weight and getting slower". Yup, yup and yup. Am there , doing that. I'm getting so old I'm even thinking about putting an exhaust system on the #14 car. Getting tired of listening to certain people whine, dontcha know. No promises mind you...... but perhaps....

What do you think, Doc / God / Fog - should I muffle it or just continue to be obnoxiously loud? (Please keep all comments relative to the car, gang - the car).

OK Dana, you got me... I was telling you to shut up. all others, despite the possibility that emra might run out of rental transponders, I suspect that they will find a way to stick one on your car if you need it bad enough. call ahead with your needs, and the, most likely will be met.

I will bring my extras, and Dana will share his (as soon as he can pry his wallet open and buy one)

I suspect that the Chief of T&S can deal with the same TX# in different groups as long as it is taken care of in Registration.

and, damnit, I am grumpy.. going bald, gaining weight and getting slower...

over and out.

What about alternate timers, like Hot Lap timers. I already have a Hot Lap Timer and I saw several at Summit Point last fall.

Chas: You know I'll spend what is required to run. My point is that this might hurt the "occassional" entrant - who doesn't know where to borrow one, is afraid there won't be enough to rent. etc., etc. I want to see EMRA succeed in every sense and that is what my comments are geared towards. You also know I will work at EMRA events and to push the EMRA schedule here in CT as best I can. Welcome to the discussion, but SHUT UP with the SHUT UP stuff already (since I'm the only one who said anything about costs).

See ya at Summit, grumpy.

Dana.

Wow, give these guys a break.

EMRA needs to make changes to survive and thrive, and eliminating the couple of hours at the end of the day for timed runs is a neccisary step.

Now let's act like a club. I have 11 transponders, lots of racers are there on tt days and have rechargable units on their cars.

How about EMRA rents them from us for 1/2 the rental fee, and without spending a nickel, EMRA has enough transponders and even gets to make a buck. or better yet, make friends with a racer and share his. just ideas.

Lastly, and I am not pointing any fingers or directing this comment at anyone in particular but SHUT UP about the cost already. Racing is expensive. Sure we want to do it as cheaply as possible but with a 2 day weekend at a premier track costing nearly $40,000 EMRA needs to pay its bills. besides all that, Entries are one of the smaller costs associated with track driving. in many cases each tire on a car is an entry fee or at least close to it.

The only way to make racing more affordable (in terms of entry fee) is to increase the # of entries drastically and consistantly.

don't forget, if you don't want to buy or rent a transponder, you can run, have fun and not get timed. you don't HAVE to have a transponder. you just have to have one if you wish to compete.

Come, have fun, make friends, and quit complaining. EMRA could be a great place to drive as long as we all work with those working to make it better.

See you at summit

I know some of the tracks rent the units also. I know the store at Summit does. I think Jersey does as well.
The group buy thing is the way to go. I got in on a group buy with NASA and it was way cheaper than what was offered.
I want to say that like 30 people want in on the group buy and it was a huge savings. They told us not to publish the numbers but it came from Discovery Parts. Tom might be something to look into to help the guys out.
If you run time trials with NASA or SCCA in the DC region you need one anyway.

Don't do any drastic decision making yet!

EMRA is working on increasing our inventory of
rental transponders.

Thanks for the input and give us some time to update you all
on the rental plan we come up with.

Anyone who plans on Time Trialing (with us or other groups)
are advised that these transponders are part of the sport of racing. We recommend at some point that you buy your own.

By the way - not at all opposed to the concept of the transponders - especially if something can be done to reorganize the run groups. Just disappointed with the statement that there won't be enough rental units to go around.....

Wow, Tom - another big expense. I don't mean to be negative but I don't think this is going to help EMRA attract more time trial participants. I suspect it will have just the opposite impact. I am considering running a full schedule of EMRA events since CART is offering a mediocre schedule, at best - but not so sure now..... I was just about to send in $500 for the discount and to help things out, but maybe I'll need that money now for a transponder.

FOR 2010 TIME TRIALERS WILL HAVE TO USE TRANSPONDERS FOR TIMED SESSIONS, TROPHIES AND CHAMPIONSHIPS. ALL LAPS ON TRACK WILL BE TIMED AND USED FOR TROPHY AWARDS.

THE TRANSPONDERS WE USE ARE AMB TRANX260. (NOT TRANX160 FOR KARTS)
THEY ARE AVAILABLE FROM PEGASUS FROM $380(DIRECT WIRED) TO $420(RECHARGEABLE).

RENTAL? EMRA WILL HAVE A FEW BUT NOT ENOUGH FOR THE ENTIRE GROUP. IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT EACH CAR HAVE IT'S OWN UNIT.
WE (EMRA) WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU WANT TO BE TIMED AND THERE ARE NO UNITS LEFT TO RENT.

RENTAL PROBABLY WILL BE $35 PER DAY PLUS A $400 DEPOSIT.
LIMITED UNITS - FIRST COME FIRST SERVED.
