At http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/article/108886/the-new-poor an article on The New Poor provided in The New York Times dated February 22, 2010, now there are 6.3 million Americans who have been unemployed for six months or longer, the largest number since the government began keeping track in 1948. In all there are 15 million Americans who are unemployed. Most have run out of their unemployment benefits and hoping Congress would approve Obama's extension package. In India there is no such unemployment package.

Other than the recession, one of the reasons that Americans are becoming unemployed is due to the declining influence of unions that has made it easier for employers to shift work to part-time and temporary employees. Factory work and even white-collar jobs have moved in recent years to low-cost countries in Asia and Latin America. Automation has helped manufacturing cut 5.6 million jobs since 2000 -- the sort of jobs that once provided lower-skilled workers with middle-class paychecks. This is being done primarily because large companies are increasingly owned by institutional investors who crave swift profits, a feat often achieved by cutting payroll.

Do you know what the poverty level in the States is? It is $1,383 per month! That in Indian Currency is Rs. 69,000! The rent for a small apartment for three is over $1,000. As medictrans has correctly stated that getting a direct MT job in the States is tough. Then why not? Why would a clinic in the States give a direct job at US rate when the clinics and hospitals there can get it done at a lower rate by outsourcing in bulk to Asian countries through MTSOs.

So if you have a relative in the States then may be the relative may be able to help by starting. If you can be happy with 80 to 90 paisa/line as HBT then continue if you already have experience or work in-house where at least there would be a salary with benefits irrespective whether there is low volume of daily work or not as is the case with HBTs. For new entrants I would definitely agree with medictrans, forget MT and look for other avenues.

Hi Srinivas,

For what it is worth, here is my two-bit of advise. You can take it or leave it.

If you go over Indeed.com, you will see the miserable problems faced by US MTs. There are just no jobs to be had in the States. Whether the MT is experienced or not, it does not matter. Things are very, very tough there. As a result, things here in India are not very good either. There are just not enough good decent jobs to be had. You will find quite a few jobs posted by individuals who sometimes do not bother to give details like company names, payment details etc. Rates offered most times are not very good and the job can be irregular; sometimes you have work, sometimes not.

Now if you are young, I would seriously suggest you get into another line. The MT field is only good if you have a few years experience and also get a direct job overseas. Otherwise, you will be working yourself to death trying to earn decent money which does not exist. I was one of the lucky few who was able to work doing direct uploadable work for about 4 years and now that job is dried up. I am now finding the hard way what it is to get local work and earn peanuts.

My advise to anyone young and smart enough is to get out of this line and do something else that does not lock you down at your computer for long hours for measly returns. If you do get work at good rates, then I suggest you continue otherwise, dump this line. It is simply not worth it in the long run.

Alternatively, go for medical billing and coding. This pays much more than MT.

Ultimately, you are the person to make the choice to continue or leave. Listen to everyone, but make up your own mind.

Hi,

How will be the future of an MT. Any better opportunities in this field in the future. As looking into current situation, I wonder whether we should continue with this field or not. Experts please respond on this topic, so this will help so many MTs, I think.

Your valuable suggestions are appreciable.

Thanks
